Guest on Connecting the Dots with The Renaissance People
I’ve got a not-so-secret secret.
Part of the reason I created my podcast, Connecting the Dots with The Renaissance People, is because I wanted an excuse to chat with some of my most intriguing friends. I love introducing the world to their amazing complexity!
But the show isn’t just meant to be just me and my friends. Today’s episode expands to the next layer out with an interview with my acquaintance, Stephanie Castillo. One of my favorite parts of the show is peeling back the many layers of my wonderfully complex guests and learning how they bring interest and expertise in a wide range of areas into the work they do.
But Stephanie was one of the first guests to challenge my categorization of her as a “Renaissance Person” and I’m ALL about getting push back to expand my thinking. As I thought more deeply about this, and a conversation I had last week with Patrick Meaney, Marie Cole and Cèleste Frazier Barthel, PhD, I think there’s a critical difference I hadn’t entirely thought through.
Much of my discussion of “Renaissance People” focused on people who had Renaissance Career Paths, where they’ve worked in multiple industries and moved around quite a bit. While Stephanie’s career does include one major pivot, which you’ll hear about in the first minute of the episode, her career since hasn’t been a significantly winding path.
But she does embody a second part of my personal definition of Renaissance Person, which is a lifelong learner filled with curiosity and a voracious appetite to “try everything”. And this fits more with the “Renaissance Mindset” I have talked about. A mindset where you love to learn for the sake of learning AND you also enjoy sharing what you’ve learned with others.
One list she shared (which can be found in the show notes I proudly curate) is a list of science communicators doing great work in social media (particularly Instagram). I want to pass this list onto you so the inspiration celebration can continue! Check out the excellent content from:
Alex Dainis
